Creative services for the design-challenged developer
When Dave Greiner from Campaign Monitor contacted me a couple months ago to see if I had enough time to take on some landing page designs for him, I was already fully immersed in another project and just wasn’t able to do it. I let Dave know that I didn’t have the time, but that I was really wanting to work with Brad Haynes on a project, and that I thought this one would be a good fit. Dave agreed.
Brad is a Art Director at Paramore|Redd as well as the principal of Anderbose and for today, he’s also a guest blogger at 31Three. I’m really happy with the work that he was able to do on these landing pages, and have asked him to share a little bit about the process. Over to Brad… - Jesse
Can’t wait to see what Apple does in this area.
I recently worked on redesigning the logo for my home church, along with a good friend of mine, Brian Potstra. It was a very difficult process for me, mainly because I’m so close to “the client”. It pretty much felt like I was working on my own logo, and we all know how tricky that can be.
So in the end, it was decided that none of the samples we came up with really fit Lakemount 100%, and that it might be a better idea to wait until we get a new building to do a thorough re-branding. Makes sense to me.
So since I’m not going to be using this logo for my home church, I figured there was probably another church out there that this would be a good fit for. Chances are that their name isn’t going to be NewLife though, so I’ll make any text changes needed to make it work.
There’s 2 different visual styles included as well as a few variations of the main mark that could be used for different ministries within the organization.
Update: The logo has been sold
I’ve used quite a few different invoicing applications in the past couple of years, but I think I may have finally found a home with Xero.
After outsourcing my books last year, I wanted to bring them back in-house this year so that I could be a little closer to the numbers and pull up reports anytime I wanted to. When I started checking out the different accounting packages available in Canada, I soon realized that any program that I purchased would need to be run in Fusion to get it to work. Bookkeeping is painful enough by itself, and I figured that if I was going to have to launch Windows XP every time I needed to send out an invoice or reconcile my books, I would be doubly prone to putting it off. Exactly what I wanted to stay away from.
Here’s the video that convinced me to give Xero a try:
Somehow the team at Xero has actually made accounting enjoyable… even borderline addictive. Check out some more videos here.

A few months ago I had the pleasure to work with the folks at Kinoma on a redesign of their website. The images below are a behind the scenes look at how the design progressed through a few iterations.
I first tried to capture the idea of showing different forms of content “flowing” through the phone’s screen…
I felt the design needed a bit more contrast, so I added the blue band, and white content area.
The default set of stacks in Leopard do a pretty good job of keeping your desktop clean of downloads, but for me, the real challenge of keeping things tidy comes from the multitude of screenshots that I take everyday.
Creating a stack for screenshots is the logical answer, but because they are saved to the desktop by default, it’s impossible to do this without first making a minor tweak to how OS X handles them. There’s probably several ways to do this, but I found a free application called deeper which seems to work pretty well.

Once you’ve changed the location, it’s as simple as dragging that new folder into your dock and tweaking the stack preferences to “Sort by date added”.
Voila… now all your screenshots will be easily accessible in any application, and your desktop will be a whole lot cleaner.
Just a quick “behind the scenes” post today, as I’m busy working on another project that I should launch in a couple of weeks.
I recently had the opportunity to work with myfamily.com (a sister company to Ancestry.com) on a redesign for their control panel. While I was working on that project, they also had me do up a few home page designs to give their internal design team some different ideas.
Using their existing site as a base for content, I created a few mockups for them that appear to being the starting point for their newly launched redesign.
There’s been a bunch of projects that I’ve done over the last year that I’d love to post here, but haven’t been able to because they’re still under a NDA. One of those projects just launched yesterday (congrats Matthew!).
If you’re planning on getting married anytime soon, head on over to eWedding.com and sign yourself up. The launch is still in the early “honeymoon” stage, so there might still be some bits and pieces that need tweaking.
