ExpressionEngine Calendar Module by Solspace ∞
My first client to use ExpressionEngine asked for a calendar for their site. They wanted to have repeating events. I told them I thought a lot of people might want that functionality, but it was not available in ExpressionEngine yet. That must have been like 5 years ago.
I can’t believe it’s taken so long to get a real calendar module for EE. Finally!
If you’re looking for some vintage artwork for the house, Vintage Printable has a great collection of public domain prints available to download.
If I had a decent sized yard, I would love to get one of these for my girls.

Make sure to flip the switch. Great work Phil.
Simplified EE Control Panel Theme
I’m currently working on a project that involves a lot of ExpressionEngine development, so I took a couple hours last night to tweak the default Control Panel theme. I’ve only tested it in Safari… so your milage may vary… but feel free to give it a try.
If I missed any bits and pieces, please let me know via the comments…

Design in a Bag.com is an online interior design resource providing professionally coordinated looks for your kitchen and bath. Each “kitchen in a bag” or “bath in a bag” is an interior design recipe for that room, and includes all of the necessary elements to help you create a stylish and successful design for your new kitchen or bath.
Great idea.
Windows Phone 7 Series Interface - Engadget ∞
There’s quite a bit of negative feedback floating around the internets about the new Windows Mobile OS. Some of it is warranted… but only some. Microsoft has made a pretty bold move with the design of this OS and we need to give some credit where credit is due. There are still a few rough edges, but I think the overall direction is looking very very nice.

Those us us who work in tech love our tools with all their complexity. We relish in the fact that we know all the keystrokes for doing every little task in our favorite apps. We are secure in our investment of so much time and energy and effort to learn all the tricks and nuances of our computers. We fool ourselves by thinking traditional computing is easy.
It isn’t.
I love the story that leads up to this final point… way too familiar.
User interfaces are one of the principal sources from which a person learns about his or her work. That understanding gets turned into diagrams, charts, and maps that, whether accurate or not, come to define the work that person does each day.

Minor iCal Fix

I was just using iCal and wondered if the interface wouldn’t make a lot more sense with just one minor tweak. The toolbar on the top is how it currently looks, and the one on the bottom is my modified version. Currently, the monthly navigation is for some reason tied to the display options, and the “today” button is left sitting alone by itself. Wouldn’t it make more sense to group all the navigation elements together? Just my 2 cents.
Making divider lines in Photoshop
Here’s another quick tip I use for making dotted or solid lines in Photoshop. When you need divider lines that are equally spaced for side navigation or tables, try using a text box with a lot of period’s or underscores instead of individual layers. It makes it easy to keep the divider lines equally spaced, and also makes it easy to adjust them later on just by changing the leading.
If you just need a single dotted line, just use a pixel font and set the anti-aliasing to “none”.

Making dotted borders in Photoshop
I posted this earlier on Twitter, but figured I should make a more permanent home for this tip.
- Create an alternating checker board pattern (different sized patterns will make different sized dots/dashes)
- Apply a “Stroke Layer Style” to the desired layer
- Change “Fill Type” to “Pattern” and select the pattern you created in step 1.
John Nack requests feedback for Graphic & Web design enhancements in Photoshop ∞
Some of the ideas presented are exactly what I’ve been waiting for… specifically:
- Buttons with states (editable Up, Down, Over, etc.)
- Intelligent widgets (e.g. buttons that resize smartly a la 9-Slice)
- Intelligent, skinnable charts (including ones with live data feeds)
- Linked files (edit one document & have the change reflected in several documents that link to it)
- Symbols (reusable objects that can be dragged in from a Library panel)
- Type styles (edit a style definition in order to update multiple type layers at once)
- Pixel-accurate Web rendering (i.e. text and objects that appear exactly as they would in a browser)
Don’t forget to take the survey!
